Local family history research and genealogy
Members of our group may be found at the Bendigo Library on Wednesdays and Saturdays, in the Research area upstairs, waiting to assist visitors with their family history research.
Their speciality is tracing ancestors and Bendigo heritage for which purpose they have created a data base of over a million names from rate books up to 1903, cemetery records, early hospital admissions, church records, and school pupil registers, etc .
But no matter the problem or where the ancestors came from members are willing to guide researchers through the maze on the internet. The latest intriguing aspect of delving into family history is tracing DNA, and we are lucky to have an experienced member willing to explain all the jargon involved.

ABOUT US. The purpose of our group is to encourage the study of Family History and to teach good research habits. We are a sub-group of the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies and financial members have free computer access to all the records held at the AIGS library in Blackburn.
Our local group is led by a committee of six who organise special indexing projects as well as monthly meetings with speakers on topical subjects.
We have published a number of indexes and books on Bendigo’s pioneers and have financially contributed to various heritage projects around Bendigo organised by other societies.
On several occasions our members have assisted the Bendigo Library and the Bendigo Regional Archives with special projects and our relationship with both these bodies is two way affair.
EXPLORE If you are interested in tracing Bendigo ancestors have you searched the free indexes on our web page www.bendigofamilyhistory.org ? These indexes are different again to our specialised database which is only available to the general public with assistance from members.
We hold monthly meetings with speakers on different subjects at 2pm on the third Saturday of the month ( Covid restrictions may apply). These meetings are open to the public who are welcome to attend and are widely advertised. Come and join us at the library for a face to face chat about your family.
